1st Swiss National GAW/GCOS Symposium 2021: White Paper

The Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) and Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) are international activities to coordinate long-term systematic observations of the composition of the atmosphere and the climate system as well as regularly assess the status of global climate observations and produce guidance for their improvement. They also facilitate services in the areas of climate, air quality and health. Switzerland implements GAW and GCOS programmes through GAW-CH and GCOS Switzerland. Both national programmes are coordinated by MeteoSwiss and implemented in partnership with a network of research and environmental institutions.

The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) is a joint initiative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UNESCO, the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the International Council of Science (ICSU). The system is designed to ensure that the observations and information needed to address climate-related issues are obtained systematically and made available to all potential users.

Nationales Klima-Beobachtungssystem

Swiss Contribution to the Global Climate Observing Systems

Jeannet, P., 2001. Swiss Contribution to the Global Climate Observing Systems 2001. Publication of MeteoSwiss, 51 p.

As required by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, this report gives an overview on the Swiss contributions to the systematic observations with regard to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and related programmes. Swiss authorities encourage and support research and systematic observation on the climate system and its impacts. This support extends to the specialised international organisations and programmes.
